What a weird year! When I look back over the past 12 months, I can't believe a year has passed, and at the same time, I can't believe ONLY a year has passed. This time last year, I had not started my job as Director of Touring at BCT. This year, I'm the Director of Production. It's strange, yet it fits. The two week break I'm in the middle of has been glorious so far. Yes, we've had company for the entire time, but that's what Christmas vacation should be about--spending time with those you love and being able to give them your full attention. I have eaten way too much, spent way too much time watching Netflix, and fed the children in our family way too much sugar. It's been kind of awesome.
2012 was a bit of a rough year, so 2013 was welcome, especially with its massive changes. The slower schedule and free evenings and weekends have been nothing short of a gift. We finally have a routine at our house, one that is working quite well for our little trio. Dean has hit his stride in kindergarten, Marcus is having a fanstastic year at the university, and I'm finally feeling like I've got my feet under me in my job. 13 has always been a lucky number for me (my birthday is February 13), so I'm glad this year turned out to be a good one.
I've met some great new people this year, people I know will be a part of my life for a long time. I look forward to nurturing these new friendships in the new year.
Here are a few goals for 2014:
*Go back to meal planning. I used to be so good about this, then I fell off the bandwagon. Planning our meals a week at a time will make shopping easier, will make us eat healthier, and will take the stress out of our evenings when we all stand around staring at the fridge going, "I dunno...what do YOU want?" then letting Dean pick, which means we all eat blueberries and string cheese. (That doesn't really happen.) (Much.)
*Lose weight. For real. It's out of hand. I have to shape up, not only for the sake of my vanity, for the sake of my health. I've kept my blood pressure and kidney disease under control for a long time. I'm not letting 10-15 extra pounds ruin that for me. I'll probably hate life for a few weeks as I start really excercising again, but I know it will make me feel better in the long run.
Ok, can we take a small break and acknowledge that 2013 was the year that I did not drink ANY Coke Zero!? Like, I quit. And I was doing pretty well at drinking just one cup of coffee a day until we started making it in the office, or my work "person" (see Grey's Anatomy) would make me go to Starbuck's, or Marcus bought me a Keurig. Now I have 2. But I"m not drinking Coke Zero! Hooray!
*Ok, that's done! I would like to go on more dates with my husband. We went to a going away party a couple of weeks ago and had the best time. Marcus and I don't get out together enough. Part of it is money. We don't have free babysitters at our disposal and the paid ones get pricey, especially if you add that cost to dinner and a movie or other activity. (All of the activities cost the dollars. Strange, that.) We had such a great time together at that party, though, that it reminded me that we need to go out together more.
*I want to show Dean more of the world in 2014. Not just far-off places, places near us. Now that he's older (OMG he will be six in five days!), I want to take him back to places we've been and get his new perspective on them.
*I want to blog more. Hold me to that, friends.
That's a pretty general list. I'm working on a more specific group of goals, one of which involves decorating my office in a Star Wars Lego theme, but we'll revisit those later.
Have a happy new year, friends. I'll be ringing mine in with my husband, brother in law, nephew and son. We made a paper chain countdown. We're going to eat hot wings and have a make your own sundae bar. We may even make our own noisemakers. (Because I am obviously insane.)
Here's hoping 2014 makes our faces hurt from smiling.
